AS the only purpose of education is acquiring knowledge, one can acquire through distance mode or even by getting hands on.

The criteria by the Banks for Loans or Companies for Jobs are only a filtering mechanism, so that the entire process would have a kind of transparency.

These, no doubts, have been barriers to most but there have always been exceptions who overcame these barriers.

I know someone who never went to regular school to have becoming the Regional Manager (East) of a very Large Indian Paper Manufacturing Company during Eighties (this gentleman joined as a handy boy in the same office as a boy, who slowly passed out 10th standard board exam. as a private student).

Another School dropout who had to join as a water boy with SV University at a very tender age, slowly and steadily completed his SSLC board exam, PUC, B.A. and finally M.A., while he simultaneouly became initially as an office attender, later LDC, UDC, Dy. Superindent, and finally Office Superindent.  The last when he was about to retire, he joined LLB, along with his youngest daughter.  The last, I heard of him, he was practicing Administrative Law in Thirupati (after retirement), while his daughter was practicing civil law.

Good debate Navneet , I think regular education is the best because you are not only gaining knowledge but also learn how to move with people and will help you to develop you personality. So education is not only about knowledge or degree there are many things you should know apart from that. So that is possible only in regular education.

Thanks.....

Regular as well as distance both hv some draw back but I think when u hv lot of responsibility then regular class is not possible becoz other member of ur family hv expectation in terms of money and other. so somewhat both are gud. regular class would be gud at garduate level after that ppl know the responsibility and know the ppl living around u and almost develop his own personality. At the point of gaining knowledge this is tremendous so what u want to gain u can gain there is a no limit.

I am for both.

Each mode of education has its vital role to play in the Society.

Regular is for those who can afford to attend regular classes and the Distance is like Sunil says is for those who started their careers (probably early), those who for some reason or other not able to attend regular classes but still desire to improve their knowledge & qualification.

I support the cause of distance education, it helps working professionals and people who want to earn and learn. Distance education is a Godsend to empower India. In fact, the way distance education is marketed is not enough, distance education programs will provide better revenues than regular courses to educational institutions, if base is better. IGNOU has the best distance education course model.

An education is learning by any means which you are comfortable with. Some are comfortable with classroom education alone , while some are comfortable with learning using the Internet. Still others learn by doing it themselves ; after all , which school teaches tight-rope walking ?

To say that one form will suit all is not correct.

Having said that , I think the best way to learn is through thinking for oneself , and having dialogue with those who are also learners , or better still , those who are more knowledgeable than you. In chess , you improve by playing against those who are better than you ( and probably losing ) , not by defeating those who are worse than you.

In today's world , where dialogue is possible online , I think distance education is best because :

a.  It allows you to learn at your own pace

b.  It gives you the freedom to ask without embarrassment or fear

c.  There are thousands of people willing to give you time and the benefit of their knowledge / experience , to clear all your doubts.

Mr Prabhakar Rao,

Look at the numbers and lengths of degrees of the educated and translate into where it is used, we have all the answers.

Name an Indian city that can be called PLANNED by INDIANS?

So distance or without the distance, education at best is treated as means to make money.

Dear friend the Lacs that are spent in getting admission to medical colleges can not be repaid following code of Medical Ethics. So we are at best treating these degrees as licence to generate more money in most instances.

Else some group of planners somewhere should have been working overtime and finding answers as to where we are headed?

Agree with you Prabhakar Rao, excepting the first line.....

.....the purpose of education to most as of nowadays appears not acquiring knowledge, but collecting degrees to make money.

That is the reason comforts for living may be rising, living comfort is not.

when  a choice is before you, prefer Distance education, this gives you all the freedom to study, learn and educate ourselves.Especially at the present day to day life which is full of uncertainty, you cannot predict which course is going to give you best dividents. Distance education gives you additional advantage of learn while you work, you can take up study as per your job needs  and help your self to further promotions, where as in Regular Degree you have to spend specific time period for studying and not guaranted job later.Who opts for Distance education ? Person who is aware that he has to learn for himself, who has the self confidence, who is self dependent and competitive in his life.Distance education population is growing every year this itself is a positive sign for the Distance education learners.

Actually DISTANCE here if appreciated properly would show it bridges gap and helps reduce strain and makes LEARNING enjoyable. It is no more comparable to the correspondence course of earlier days. In the present days technology all the facilities of the traditional regular course can be achieved with bonus in shape of affordability, reduced stress, saving time in hand.

Thanks,

Samarendra

Dont know why this is coming again - I said it somewhere else... regular degrees add to the knowledge because of inter-personal interactions. This is missing in a distance education. This interaction at times gives you more "knowledge" than the degree. Also the phenomenon of Contact-Maintain-Update of the social/technical network will yeild better results at a later date

Friends,

Someone did not like my deviation from peripheral to basic and reflected by thumbing down. Can we say we do not like basics being questioned?

To satisfy the surface question: Where necessary regular education should be preferred yet for a lot of others who may need to utilize the time to earn as well distance education is better.

I will again stress on the root; Each of them is only as much useful as can help convert the person to respect REASON and make use for bettering the lives of others besides self. And to achieve this both need a change.

Hi Manoj,

thanks to have invited me to this discussion.

Based on my experience, I support your opinion. In more general terms I think that distance learning, making you working in isolation, don't facilitate the growth of important capabilities like to work in team, having challenging live interaction with different people etc.

At the same time, I'm not so sure that every knowledge can really be learnt "at distance": I'm thinking, for example, to physics, mathematics, engineering etc.

Regular degree is always good, but certain times you realize your talents or life path is not what you are currently pursuing so if an option of online degree is available the person can pursue his passion and get accreditation also for it in his spare time

The level of gaining knowledge from regular education can not be gained from distance education.

Regular Education should come first.

Then comes Distance Education.

----------------- Additions : When some one is too eager to gather knowledge but may not reach the physical school for some reason, may opt for distance education. Distance education is better than no education. This may bring satisfaction to some extent also to those who do not bother for "Paper Degrees". This degree might be 'value added' along with work experiences for future prospects.

In regular education instead of learning by studying or writing, you can even get ample of practical experience in your own group/family.  Whereas, in the distance education, you will not get practical support and natural environment.

Regular Education is really good and better as long as you have good facaulty (qualified and experienced) and infrastructure facility in the Institution. Also institutions reputation as far as honesty and integrity and Values is important. Once you have a regular degree and some experience then you will be in a position to learn on your own and you can also take the help of your collegues and others arround you. Of course you cannot learn swimming or driving by distance education. take for example environment education you can learn by readung and through discussion. Of course to measure the extent of polution for example you need to have a lab facility. but the damage the polutasnt cause you can experience by studying the nature on your own like fish dying in tanks because of pollution. there again if want to find out what caused the death of fish you need to find out the disolved oxyeg levels in the water if it is because of oxygen depeltion cause by the pollutant or level of toxins in the water if the cause of death is poison. DIstance education system guides you on how you can learn on your own study at your own pace. Each has a role to play and you cannot say which is better. Even in regular colleges many a times facaulty is inexperienced and they may conduct examination based on what they have taught in the class rather than what you are supposed to know to get a degree.

I would support regular education over the distance education. If we have a look at most of the institutions providing distance education we will see that these institutions are having dubious characteristics.

Regular education not only gives you a degree but puts you through a specific system where you can build yourself as a better human being.

Having said that I have a wish that most students studying in our colleges will do a lot of effort to educate themselves through self-education.

EDUCATION IS NOT CRAMMING FACTS AND FIGURES. IT IS IMBIBING CULTURE AND CUSTOMS AS WELL AS TO LEARN APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE FOR BETTERMENT OF INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY.DISTANT EDUCATION COULD ENRICH PEOPLE WITH FACTS AND FIGURES ONLY

Education comes from a lot of factors not just reading and understanding of books. This requires interaction with society, peers, group discussions, ability to see and understand view points that are directly opposite to and asymettrical from yours. This also leads to the possibility : "I may be wrong and there may be a different way". ALL this comes only from interaction with people
